Cavani could face ban for ‘affectionate’ racial term

Edinson Cavani could find himself in trouble with soccer authorities after using a racial term on social media.

The Uruguayan forward inspired Manchester United’s 3-2 comeback over Southampton with two goals after leaving the bench.

In response to a congratulatory message on Instagram, Cavani used the Spanish term ‘negrito’, which translates to ‘black’.

United noted that the word was clearly used in a loving way and has different connotations in South America, where Cavani is from.

The club said the 33-year-old had been informed that such terms are perceived very differently in the UK and subsequently removed the post.

The Football Association issued guidelines before this season to crack down on racist and discriminatory language and behavior, and crimes on social media carry a minimum three-game ban.

Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva and Dele Alli of Tottenham were suspended for a match last season following posts that violated FA guidelines.
