We didn’t learn anything new, but it’s not always about absorbing new information. There are rare times when you can still rejoice over something you already know, and the Drinmore Rookie Hunt from baroneracing.com was one of those times.

We knew Envoi Allen was exceptional, we didn’t need a 10th consecutive success in a four-runner event to tell us that. We knew from his impeccable debut in the chase at Down Royal that he could jump. We knew it was way above this lot, its starting price told you so. Even the layers learned little: Betfair only put it at 15-8 from 2-1 for Chase de Marsh Novices.

You see, this was much more than discovering new things for the future. It was all about enjoying the present, and if you didn’t enjoy watching Envoi Allen do his thing, then show jumping isn’t your thing.

There was a brief moment, just after the penultimate, in which Assemble made the impossible appearance possible. It lasted about two steps. Normal service was soon resumed thanks to a squeeze from Jack Kennedy who reminded us all why we fell in love with Envoi Allen in the first place. Whoosh. He had left.

There were eight and a half lengths between Envoi Allen and Assemble on the line, the furthest he has ever won in a race, and the scariest thing of all was that Gordon Elliott told us afterwards that there was much more to come.

Elliott said: “All Jack said was that he was having a good hit afterwards, so I’d say there are a lot of improvements to come from him. He hasn’t delved in here, Cheltenham is the plan.”

The winning coach, who would complete a four timekeeper that day, added: “A clear round is all you want and Jack said he was perfect all the way. In fact, he said it because the penultimate was tough for us last year. [where Samcro fell] I wanted to put him back on his hocks for it. They got closer to him, but once he gave him a squeeze on the back of the penultimate, it was all over. “

A grade 3 rookie chase over 2m4f in Punchestown on January 17 will be Envoi Allen’s next outing and from there it will be towards Marsh.

Elliott said: “We will probably skip Christmas and head to Punchestown in January for a race of over two and a half miles.

“It was heartbreaking to watch, but it’s great to have a horse like this. I don’t get nervous too often, but I do get nervous seeing this guy.”

One man who was certainly not nervous was Kennedy. The 21-year-old didn’t even flinch when Assemble emerged from the outside in the penultimate.

“He wasn’t worried,” Kennedy responded when asked if he was concerned that the field was so close to him at the time. “He was very stable, just cutting. He has a lot of changes and he knew what he would do. He jumped very well and did everything perfect.”

Perfect indeed. We expected no less.
