ACCESS TO SOUTH William Street in Dublin city center was temporarily restricted last night due to large groups of people gathering in the area.

Gardaí from Pearse Street and the Public Order Unit restricted access to the street for a short period yesterday to disperse the crowd.

No arrests were made.

Talking to TheJournal.ie, A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said that Gardaí “restricted access to South William Street for a short period of time on Saturday night, November 28, 2020 due to public health concerns after observing large groups of people gathering in the zone”.

“All those present dispersed without incident and no arrests were made,” the Gardaí said.

“From the beginning in supporting Covid-19 public health guidelines and regulations, An Garda Síochána has adopted and will continue to adopt a graduated police response in its tradition of consent policing. This has got the Garda members involved, explaining, encouraging and, as a last resort, enforcing. “

“The Covid-19 pandemic remains a public health crisis and An Garda Síochána continues to call on all citizens to comply with the Public Health Guidelines and Regulations, in particular essential travel, to continue saving lives.”

Under Level Five restrictions, pubs have been allowed to open for take out, but alcohol consumption is not allowed within 100 meters of where it was sold.

Videos shared of people gathering on South William Street earlier this month, along with videos from Cork’s Patrick Street and Coal Quay, sparked a discussion about the feasibility of take-out pints, with Taoiseach Michéal Martin saying he was “extremely concerned and annoyed “by reports of people drinking in the streets.

“I think it goes against what is acceptable in terms of adherence to guidelines under regulations because we all have to work to try to reduce the incidence of the virus,” Martin said.

Beginning Friday, December 4, restaurants and pubs with on-site kitchens may reopen for seated diners with additional restrictions.

Alcohol-only pubs will still be able to serve take out drinks, but will not be able to reopen.
