Bus trip from north to Dundrum shopping canceled after online uproar

A bus tour of NORTH Ireland that promised a “relaxing” trip to Dublin’s Dundrum shopping center was canceled after the shopping center stated that the visit was “not in line with government guidelines”. GD Tours had posted an ad online calling for shoppers to board in Derry for a shopping trip to the Dundrum Mall despite Covid-19 restrictions in the north.

The post read: “With stores closing in the north tomorrow at 12 at night! The South will reopen on Monday the 30th. We are going to sell seats and have a relaxing day at Ireland’s largest shopping center!

“With over 100 designer stores under one roof! This will be on Saturday, December 5. Seating £ 25 per person … “
The coach company published a Northern Ireland mobile phone number for reservations and this was widely shared online. The announcement drew a great reaction from those concerned about organizing such a trip.

A woman on Twitter directly asked Tánaiste Leo Varadkar to intervene. She wrote: “@LeoVaradkar please stop this from happening.”

Another tweeter wrote: “I guess this is not supported by the mall. It is irresponsible of those who organize it ”.

And another intervened: “As someone who works in this mall, providing a service for vulnerable people, wheelchairs, scooters, etc … I’m not happy.

One tweeter even asked if the ad was real. “Is this a parody? Can’t get out of our county for non-essential travel, but can cross multiple counties to drive from Derry to Dublin?

“In that case, can I go to Tipperary if I rent a bus from Derry and fill it with my friends?”

A spokesperson for Dundrum Town Center told independent.ie: “The safety and well-being of our colleagues, customers and retailers is our number one priority at Dundrum Town Center, and please be assured that we take our responsibility very seriously.

“Trips like the one referenced are currently not in line with government guidance, nor are they affiliated with the center.

“We look forward to welcoming clients to the center, and all visits must be in line with government guidance. We ask that all visitors are responsible and considerate of others when visiting. “

An attempt was made to contact GD Tours. A text message from the advertised contact number replied: “This trip will not take place.”

On Facebook, it is announced that the bus company is based in Dungiven, Co Derry.
