Manchester United on the brink of knockout phase after routine win

Manchester United remained the leaders of Group H of the Champions League with two goals from Bruno Fernandes that helped them beat Istanbul Basaksehir 4-1 at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Fernandes put United into a seventh-minute lead in spectacular fashion when Alex Telles’ corner kick was half-cleared at the edge of the area and his first shot whistled past Mert Gunok on Basaksehir’s goal.

If the Turkish goalkeeper couldn’t stop that effort, he clearly fouled for United’s second goal, in the 19th minute, when he missed a Telles cross, gifting Fernandes a simple touch.

Marcus Rashford then ran for a long forward pass from Victor Lindelof, but Boli Bolingoli hit him unnecessarily as he burst into the area and Rashford himself converted the penalty to make it 3-0.

Former Chelsea striker Demba Ba had two great chances to get Basaksehir back into the game, but failed to find the target with a free header and then grazed a shot from close range.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opted to put some of his key starters to rest early in the second half with Mason Greenwood returning to the side as a substitute.

The Turkish side came back from a goal in the 75th minute with a free kick from Deniz Turuc’s left foot, which David De Gea did well to reach, but behind the goal line.

Basaksehir suddenly had some faith and United freaked out when Edin Visca hit the crossbar from a distance, prompting Solskjaer to bring in Nemanja Matic to prop things up.

The game was out of the question in injury time on a fast break, when Greenwood passed the ball to Dan James to concede.
