Joe Biden has said that he does not want to see a protected border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Speaking to reporters in Wilmington, Delaware, the president-elect of the United States said he had discussed the issue with Boris Johnson and other European leaders.
“We don’t want a protected border,” he said Tuesday. “We want to make sure that we work too hard to make Ireland work.
“I have spoken to the British Prime Minister, I have spoken to the Taoiseach, I have spoken to others and I have spoken to the French.
“The idea of having the northern and southern border once again closed is just not correct. We just have to keep the border open.”
Biden has previously weighed in on the Brexit border debate, warning of a breach of the Good Friday Agreement would threaten the prospect of a future Trade agreement between the United States and the United Kingdom.
He said in September: “We cannot allow the Good Friday Agreement that brought peace to Northern Ireland to become a victim of Brexit.”
