Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has backed Dean Henderson to become a world-class goalkeeper as the academy graduate continues to power Manchester United’s number one veteran David De Gea.

The 23-year-old returned to Old Trafford in the summer after two impressive loan seasons with Sheffield United, and also enjoyed stints at Shrewsbury, Grimsby and Stockport.

Such experiences helped establish Henderson as one of the best young goalkeepers in the world, prompting United to take him to the first-team squad in the summer and reward him with a new and improved contract until at least 2025.

Solskjaer declined to confirm whether the home attacker would make his fourth appearance for United in Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Istanbul Basaksehir, but said the opportunities will be closer, amid claims. he could be borrowed.

“Dean wants to stay at Man United and play for Man United”, said of Henderson, who this month made his senior England debut and is pushing for a place in the reorganized European Championship.

“I don’t see the logic in (suggestions that) there is only one possible appearance before Christmas left. Do you know how many games we have?

“I don’t entirely agree if (you’re suggesting) that tomorrow is a defining (moment) for Dean.

“He has returned, he is training very well, he is maturing. He has had some games.

“He is training, for me, with one of the best goalkeepers in the world. He has the potential to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world. It is a great competition between them.

“I don’t buy that argument that it’s a success or a failure for him.

“It’s not my job to keep everyone happy, you know? I’ve said it several times. The performances will always be the deciding factor whether you play or not.

“I think that in every position you play for Man United, it is your duty or your responsibility to make me and the coaches happy, so there is a greater chance that you can play next time.”
