Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp laid the groundwork for his evisceration of Sky Sports days earlier.
Klopp chided the television stations for the schedule of matches their Premier League champions and other English clubs face in European competition after beating Leicester on Sunday.
The Reds thrashed alongside Brendan Rodgers at Anfield Despite a series of key absences, Naby Keita also succumbed to injury early in the second half as the influx of games and questionable start times began to take their toll.
“If we keep playing on Wednesday and Saturday at 12.30, I’m not sure if you will finish the season with 11 players,” Klopp said. “The first six are the same. All the first six and seven. But I know [broadcasters] I don’t care, and that’s the problem. “
Athletic They claim Klopp almost embarked on a similar line of argument after his pre-game press conference on Friday.
The Liverpool manager is said to have “ended up speaking to the print media in a little annoyance by asking reporters why no one had asked him about the Premier League coaches meeting” earlier in the week.
Klopp had given an exclusive interview to the Daily Mail in which he voiced his complaints on a number of issues, including the five-substitute rule.
“This is not a normal season now,” he said. “Now it’s a four-week shorter season but with the same number of games. This is a very special moment, not only for football but for the whole world. We all have to push ourselves and fight hard to get over it.
“In football, it is like that. It seems like everyone changed, but the two things that remained were the Premier League match roster and three substitutes.
“These are the two things we have to talk about. We have to talk to the stations. People need to understand soccer players. People say, ‘Oh, but they earn so much.’ It’s not about that. They earn so much because they are so special. “
The fact that he was not asked more about those dates seemed to frustrate Klopp, who proceeded to criticize Sky Sports a couple of days later.
