Joe Brolly has suggested that moving the All-Ireland Football Championship semi-final between Dublin and Cavan out of Croke Park would be a “magnificent gesture.”
Currently, no spectators are allowed to attend championship games under current lockdown rules, and it’s unclear if that will change when Ireland comes out of their Level 5 lockdown in just over a week.
If the game takes place behind closed doors, they could theoretically host more venues across the country.
Dublin has an advantage playing matches at Croke Park is an often leveled criticism of GAA bosses amid Ireland’s current streak of five straight titles and ten straight Leinster crowns.
Brolly posted the idea on social media and received a combination of responses from Twitter bettors.
He said: “What a wonderful gesture it would be from Dublin, our greatest football team of all time and wonderful ambassadors for the game, if they played the Irish semi-final against Cavan in Ulster. Maybe at Armagh Athletic Grounds or Down Marshes.”
And the conversation generated some interesting responses, to say the least.
One said, rightly, that “maybe the Cavan guys would like to play at Croke Park”, given that it is an all-Ireland semi-final.
Another chimed in, saying that on the 100th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, the game would be too moving to move.
“The same four teams in the 1920 semi-finals, Croke Park, the sacred lawn in the middle of that day,” he said.
“And you want to take away the matches? Absolutely crazy.”
Many people would point out, correctly, that Dublin vs Cavan was played in Navan at that Championship, with the Tipperary and Mayo semi-final at Croke Park alone (and two years later, due to the war).
And another suggestion thrown into the hat was Thurles, with a boy saying, “Why play in Ulster? If you’re looking for neutral ground, play in Thurles, where the GAA was established.”
