The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have revealed that their dog Lupo has passed away.
The nine-year-old black cocker spaniel was a wedding gift from Kate’s brother, James.
William and Kate said in an Instagram post on Sunday: “Very sadly, last weekend our beloved dog, Lupo, passed away.
“He has been in the heart of our family for the past nine years and will be greatly missed.”
Following the birth of Prince George in July 2013, William said that Lupo had coped well with the turmoil in the house.
“Actually, he’s doing well,” he said.
“Since a lot of people know they have dogs and bring a newborn back, it takes a little time to adjust, but no, so far it has been fine.”
He added, “He’s been drooling a bit around the house, so he’s perfectly happy.”
In images taken on the occasion of Prince George’s third birthday, the little royal caused controversy by offering Lupo a lick of his ice cream.
He prompted the RSPCA to warn people not to give dairy products to their dogs as they can be toxic, though the animal welfare charity praised George for trying to help Lupo stay cool in the summer heat.
High energy
Spaniels, which were bred as hunting dogs, are known to have a lot of energy and Kate once commented wistfully about the well-behaved dogs of a charity worker on a visit to Keswick in the Lake District.
“Maybe we should lend you Lupo,” he joked.
In March, Kate revealed that table tennis was a difficult activity at home due to Lupo’s determination to participate.
During the couple’s visit to the Republic, he told young people at a rest center in Co Kildare: “We try to do this at home, but our dog keeps catching the ping pong balls.”
Lupo’s mother Ella is understood to be owned by Kate’s mother Carol.
James Middleton was very affected by the death.
He posted on Instagram: “Nothing can prepare you for the loss of a dog. For those who have never had a dog, it can be difficult to understand the loss.

“However, those who have loved a dog know the truth: a dog is not just a pet; he is a family member, a best friend, a loyal companion, a teacher and a therapist ”.
Mr. Middleton described himself as “Ella, Zulu, Inka, Luna, Mabel and Nala’s dog dad” on his Instagram page.
He said that he took Ella for a long walk and lit a candle in memory of Lupo after receiving the sad news.
