RTÉ Gaelic football analyst Ciaran Whelan said Dublin’s 21-point loss to Meath in the Leinster final tonight was “concerning for the game”.
In Dessie Farrell’s first season as boss, the Dubs claimed their 10th straight Leinster title and it was one of the easiest yet, the five-time champions of Ireland racking up a whopping 54 point difference in just three games.
Meath made the Super 8 in 2019 and played Division 1 soccer in 2020, drawing some excitement after the restart, with better performances in the league and a 12-goal run in his first two games in Leinster’s championship against Wicklow. and Kildare.
Any optimism was immediately dashed as Dublin built up a huge lead in the first half, only releasing in the fourth quarter when Meath began scoring some final scores in a desperate bid for respectability.
The 21-point margin of victory was ultimately greater than the 16-point gap that separated the teams in last year’s decider.
“They crushed their opponents psychologically,” Whelan told RTÉ Sport after the match.
“They (Leinster counties) don’t think they can take on Dublin. It’s a huge task. They are beaten before they get here. Dublin is way ahead.

“It’s concerning for the game because we’re looking for entertainment. If you had 50,000 here tonight, half of them would probably go home at halftime.
“You worry that no one is raising their hands to chase them.
“At a lower level, Meath has largely beaten Dublin a number of times in recent years. So hopefully some of these counties will start to close the gap.
“It is not happening and it is concerning.
“At the end of the day, sport is about entertainment. And while Dublin was fantastic tonight, does it really give us an entertaining night? Probably not.”
