Japan hits third consecutive day of record coronavirus cases

The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Japan hit a record for the third day in a row at 2,418.

Japan, with fewer than 2,000 coronavirus-related deaths, has been relatively successful in containing the damage of the pandemic with social distancing and the widespread use of masks.

But concerns mount about another increase over a three-day weekend. Monday is the Labor Thanksgiving holiday.

A government panel on the coronavirus will meet later Saturday and may decide to cut back on the “GoTo” tourism campaign, which offers discounts for domestic travel and dining out.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has been aggressive in keeping the economy going while balancing the health risks.

Tokyo’s Haneda airport was packed with tourists on Saturday. Popular places for vacation travel, such as the northernmost main island of Hokkaido and urban areas such as Tokyo and Osaka, have seen Covid-19 cases rise recently.
