LEISUREPLEX at MacCurtain St and Brian Boru St is scheduled to be demolished to house a 171-room hotel on the site.
Cork City Council has granted permission for the development of a new five- to seven-story hotel, which will include a bar and restaurant on the ground floor, a rooftop floor on the fifth floor, and new service vehicle access to MacCurtain Street.
However, the decision could still be appealed to An Bord Pleanála.
The planning request was submitted by International Investment ICAV in March.
The decision on the development was delayed as Cork City Council planners requested more information on the development before making a decision.
The development will see most of the existing structures demolished.
However, the existing facade of the old Postal Classification Offices will be maintained and modified as it is a protected structure.
Twenty-three conditions are attached to the Cork City Council approval of the development.
One of the conditions establishes specifications, method statements and work schedules for the conservation of the façade of the old Postal Classification Offices, it must be prepared by an architect registered with the Built Heritage Conservation Professional, who will certify at the end of the execution of the works. in accordance with “good conservation practices”.
Another condition establishes that a total of 38 parking spaces for bicycles must be included.
Developers have also been asked to incorporate the planting of pollinator-friendly native plant and tree species into the landscape plan, “when possible.”
Currently a bowling alley and arcade, the site was previously a cinema that remained open for more than 50 years.
The 700-seat Coliseum cinema opened in 1913.
It finally closed its doors in 1964.
If there is no appeal against the decision, a grant of permission will be issued according to the decision after the expiration of the period within which an appeal can be made to An Bord Pleanála.
