The Irish violinist chosen to play at Joe Biden’s inauguration is “almost a member of the family,” having played for the president-elect of the United States on several occasions.
Patricia Treacy, of Louth, was invited by the Biden family on Wednesday to perform at the event in Washington DC on January 20, 2021.
“It was an incredible honor and a privilege and I honestly can’t believe it,” he said.
.“I don’t know what to think. My head is spinning.”
Mrs Treacy, one of Ireland’s finest solo violinists, was asked to perform for the then Vice President in March 2016, during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in Washington.
“After the performance, he was chatting, and he was down to earth and he was so genuine.”
She also played for Mr. Biden when he came to Ireland in the summer and was asked to play for him again at Cooley, Co Louth.
“I am so fond of him,” he said.
“That day when the family request said please join us at Lily Finnegan’s pub and the Secret Service took me to the trailer … where I could spend time with the family.
“Since then I have been very friendly with all of them.”
Ms. Treacy has received numerous prestigious music awards and has performed at iconic venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York and the Royal Albert Hall in London.
For the centennial of 1916, he performed a specially commissioned piece written by Patrick Cassidy.
Ms. Treacy will perform at the event on Capitol Hill and said she is “both honored and privileged and obviously very excited,” but not sure what piece of music she will play yet.
“They just gave me the date, we don’t know what the protocol for the day will be, no,” Ms. Treacy said.
“But I am sure they will contact me again and we will solve all that.”
He said he would like to touch an Irish air for the president-elect.
“I think it would be very appropriate. I mean, he is from Ireland, after all.”
