DUBLIN ZOO HAS SAID FUNDRAISING 1 million euros, after warning that the attraction may be closed permanently due to the impact of the Covid-19 restrictions.
A press release announcing the zoo’s fundraising campaign was published at 8.30am today, meaning that € 1 million was raised in less than 12 hours.
“Your kind messages and generous donations have really overwhelmed the entire Dublin Zoo team,” a message on social media said.
We understand that this is a challenging time for everyone – your support means a lot to us, now more than ever!
Earlier today, zoo director Dr. Christoph Schwitzer said he expects the zoo’s emergency cash reserves to last until next spring, “and no further, right now.”
Following concerns raised by the public and politicians, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said the government would step in to ensure that Dublin Zoo remains open.
Schwitzer told Morning Ireland today that caring for the animals only costs € 500,000 a month, and that the zoo estimates losses of € 8.2 million in potential revenue so far this year.

He said that steps have been taken to save costs, but there are limitations on what they can do.
You cannot leave an elephant without permission, you cannot shut down a zoo at night when you go home. Our animals need and deserve care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and we offer the highest standards of animal care and welfare possible.
