The sister of a man stabbed to death by his friend yesterday paid an emotional tribute to her brother.
And we can reveal that the alleged killer called 999 after stabbing Michael McDonagh, 24, in the stomach at a home in Swinford, Co Mayo, on Monday.
Gardai believes the suspect panicked after attacking his friend around 11 p.m. at a home on the Carrowbeg Estate before calling for help.
Although another man was on the property at the time of the incident, he was not injured.
The main suspect, 30, was arrested at the scene by the police and was detained last night on suspicion of murder. The knife victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
DEADLY ROW
Gardai, who yesterday conducted a forensic search of the home, believes Michael was killed after a fight at the property.
A source said: “There was a kind of ruckus in the house and then there was a knife. The main suspect was the one who called the emergency services and remained at the scene until they arrived.
“Now he will be questioned about what the dispute was about.”
Last night the emotional sister of the knife victim, Donna, said online: “I love you bro, I am lost without you flying high, my angel, I am heartbroken.”
And local Fianna Fail councilor Michael Smyth also told the Irish Sun how the area was in shock.
THE FAMILY TRAGEDY
He said: “It is very tragic for the families involved. The community has also suffered trauma.
“It is a small residential community and they are traumatized by the event. I have also asked the local authority to support them. “
The murder suspect is well known to Gardai and lived in emergency accommodation.
He had previously received a suspended sentence for being in possession of multiple knives.
And he was also previously involved in a robbery.
We can also reveal the tragic Michael, whose family lived in Knock, was also the victim of another knife attack earlier this year.
SUSPECTED WARNING SIGNS
His friend, who was in the house at the time of the attack, is expected to help Gardai with his questions.
The suspect lived in the area for about 18 months and has wreaked havoc.
There have been petitions from locals after he brought antisocial behavior to an area where many have lived most of their lives.
A Swinford resident told the Irish Sun: “This man caused significant anxiety in the area. The locals have raised it multiple times. And people are obviously shocked by what has happened. But the warning signs were there. “
Police yesterday urged anyone with information about the murder to contact them.
A spokesperson said: “Gardai is asking anyone who may have information in relation to this incident to come forward.
Gardai is also appealing to anyone who witnessed unusual activity in the town of Swinford between 8pm and 11.15pm last night to come forward.
“Anyone with information should contact the Swinford Garda station on 094 925 2990 or the confidential Garda line at 1800 666 111.”
