Dr Tony Holohan ‘increasingly concerned’ and warns Ireland only has two weeks to stop worrying about the Covid trend

The medical director voiced further fears that Ireland’s progress in curbing the spread of Covid-19 is being hampered in recent days.

The country is now within more than half of the Level Five restrictions that were implemented in mid-October in an attempt to address an increase in coronavirus cases here.

The restrictions are expected to be eased on December 1 before Christmas with the goal of reaching a point where around 100 cases are confirmed per day.

However, Dr Tony Holohan said yesterday that he was “increasingly concerned” after it emerged that the average number of confirmed cases in Ireland had risen rapidly in just one week.

He said: “I am increasingly concerned that the positive trends that we have seen recently have not been sustained.

“The 5-day moving average of daily cases has increased from an average of 350 cases on November 11 to 424 today.

“We have two weeks to continue our efforts to reduce community transmission of this disease as much as possible. The lower the incidence, the more flexibility the country will have to make the measures more flexible. “

Another 366 coronavirus cases were confirmed on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, sadly, another 11 Covid-19 related deaths were announced.

At 2:00 p.m. yesterday, 272 patients are in Irish hospitals with Covid, of which 34 are in ICU.

This marked an increase of 14 additional hospitalizations in 24 hours.
