A MAN stabbed to death in Co Mayo last night has been locally named as Michael McDonagh, 24.
The young man died after sustaining stab wounds at a home in Swinford around 11pm.
His body was transferred this morning to the Mayo University Hospital, where an autopsy performed by Dr. Kathleen Han Suyin, deputy state pathologist, would be carried out.
A man in his 30s was arrested at the scene and is being held at the Castlebar Garda station.
Gardai is now conducting house-to-house investigations and gathering and viewing local CCTV footage as they try to determine the movements of those involved before death occurred.
A senior investigative officer has been appointed and a family liaison officer has also been appointed, Gardai says.
COMMUNITY ‘TRAUMATIZED’
Fianna Fail local councilman Michael Smyth said the local area was in shock.
He told the Irish Sun: “It is very tragic for the families involved. The community has also suffered trauma.
“It is a small residential community and they are traumatized by the event. I have also asked the local authority to support them. “
Police today urged anyone with information to contact them.
A spokesperson said: “Gardai is asking anyone who may have information in relation to this incident to come forward.
Gardai is also appealing to anyone who witnessed unusual activity in the town of Swinford between 8pm and 11.15pm last night to come forward.
