The Irish Prison Service has seized what it says is the largest smuggled loot smuggled into a prison in Mountjoy this morning.
Drugs, alcohol, telephones and SIM cards were some of the items that were discovered hidden in a food delivery truck.
A man has been arrested and is being questioned at Mountjoy Garda Station.
Around 8.30 a.m. M., Prison officials from the Operational Support Unit searched a normal food delivery van.
They discovered 10,000 tablets, bags of what is believed to be cocaine, suspected cannabis, 30 phones, SIM cards, bottles of whiskey, steroids, and an exercise band.
The tablets were individually wrapped with the prisoners’ names, and some of the phones were small enough to conceal them internally.
The discovery was part of an intelligence-led investigation.
The Association of Prison Officers welcomed the seizure, which it said highlights the dangers posed by drugs within the prison.
With more than 700 inmates, Mountjoy is the largest prison in the country that houses some of the most dangerous criminals, including top organized crime figures.
The director general of the Irish Prison Service, Caron McCaffrey, said the drugs would have had a devastating impact on the prison population with the potential for death from overdoses.
Gardaí believes that the sophisticated drug smuggling operation is linked to members of the Kinahan gang in prison.
The loot was hidden in sugar bags and dusted with coffee to confuse sniffer dogs.
The drugs were pre-assigned, but with the street value of the loot estimated at more than € 150,000, there is a real fear that it could lead to violence in the prison, as the responsible gang tries to establish how the smuggling ring was discovered .
