Davy Fitzgerald has confirmed that 2021 will be his last year in charge of Wexford, in an interview that saw him criticize his critics.
The 2019 Leinster champions failed to shoot in this year’s championship, losing convincingly to Galway and Clare, but Fitzgerald defended his players, suggesting that the number of games his dual players had at the club level negatively impacted on energy levels.
Fitzgerald’s former manager with Clare, Ger Loughnane, was critical in his newspaper column and the Wexford manager dismissed his views as irrelevant, in his opinion.
“In my opinion, he would not be aware of what is going on in the GAA world,” Fitzgerald said on South East Radio.
“My honest opinion is that I feel a little sorry for him. Ger is not involved in any club. He has not been involved with anyone since he went to Galway and did not have a good time. Actually, he could not read a” If you read any of his articles, he cannot read the game. He does not see what is happening, “he added.
“I don’t hate Ger Loughnane. I feel sorry for him. Because every week he has a cut with someone.”
Fitzgerald said the bad feeling about men dates back to Fitzgerald’s time in charge of Clare.
“I remember the night I asked him to present medals to the team in 2013, he actually told them he didn’t rate them as a good team until they won a second, which I found very disgusting to tell them.
“Before we played Galway in 2015, the things he said about them were unreal, it gave them a lot of motivation. I remember a member of the Galway management team told me just a year or two ago that Ger gave them so much motivation, he had things in his dressing room.
“That tells its own story about Ger Loughnane. The only one who is ‘me, me, me’ is Ger Loughnane.”
When asked about criticism within the county, Fitzgerald pointed to Wexford’s track record before replacing Liam Dunne as manager and what they have accomplished in four years.
“There’s nothing wrong with being critical. I guess those guys who are critical have driven at the top level and in different things and have a right to be critical. I can’t stop that.
“All I would tell you is that in the last four years, I think it’s been pretty decent. You can take the last 10-12 years before I arrived, and what was accomplished or not accomplished, I’m not entirely sure. But all I know is that we got promoted from Division 1B, which he couldn’t do, we won two Walsh Cups, which he hadn’t won in a long time, and we won a Leinster championship and we were within walking distance of an All – Ireland Final “.
When asked to reflect on how things went wrong this year, Fitzgerald pointed to Wexford’s tackle count against Galway and Clare.
“One thing stands out: our tackle count, which is what we’re doing. Normally it’s between 95 and 100, for the last two games it was around 40.
“It was a weird year. It was hard to pin it down exactly. Not many have as many dual players as we do and it’s hard to ask the guys to come week after week.”
