Shamrock Rovers midfielder Aaron McEneff said his call-up in the Republic of Ireland was a proud moment for him and his family.
McEneff was one of four players called up to the team this afternoon when coach Stephen Kenny tried to cope with another series of absences, via the coronavirus and suspension.
Ireland is missing no less than 13 from the originally appointed squad to participate in this international window, and today came the announcement that Matt Doherty and James McClean were the last Irish players to test positive for Covid-19.
McEneff was called up alongside his Shamrock Rovers teammate Graham Burke and, with Jack Byrne already a regular fixture in the setup of late, the team now has three players from the newly crowned Airtricity Premier Division champions. League.
The other two called up this afternoon were Millwall’s young forward Troy Parrott and Peterborough’s Jack Taylor.
“It is a very proud moment for me and my family,” McEneff told FAI.ie this afternoon. “I found out when I went to practice this morning at Shamrock Rovers.
“To be honest, I was absolutely thrilled. The people you grew up with texted and called you, the phone went crazy.
“An international call-up is one of those things that if they come, they come. You don’t really think about that. And for me today, it has come. It seems like the hard work is starting to pay off.
“It’s been a long time. But look, it happened today.”
Derry’s McEneff represented Northern Ireland in the U17, U19 and U21 categories and confirmed that his international pass came just a fortnight ago.
“I got the phone call about two weeks ago. It’s been a long time in the process. I’m glad it took place two weeks ago because I wouldn’t be here today if it hadn’t.”
“Everyone is on the team on merits. I worked hard in training today. I enjoyed it, getting to know the guys. I hope to get back to training tomorrow and Wednesday’s game.”
