Dr. Ronan Glynn has said that NPHET is not currently contemplating an extension to Level Five, but is concerned that our progress is “deteriorating.”

The Deputy Medical Director spoke after another 456 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed in Ireland tonight.

While, sadly, five more people have died from the killer virus.

And Dr. Glynn shared the concern of health officials that we are on the wrong track in our fight to suppress the virus.

Dr. Ronan Glynn, Deputy Medical Director.

The deputy CMO said: “We are concerned that the positive trajectory that we have been reporting in recent weeks has stalled at best and is actually deteriorating.”

He added that there was only a short period of time left to “turn this around” with a focus on public health measures.

Dr. Glynn continued: “One of the biggest detriments to our progress is an open focus on where we could be in six weeks. We have to focus on today and tomorrow and what people are doing individually.

“We have no idea where we’ll be in two weeks right now. It could improve a lot, it could get a lot worse.”

“What that dictates is what people do today, tomorrow, and the next day. We won’t see the outcome of those interactions for ten days.

“This is not a message that we could recommend further measures or the extension of Level Five, we really don’t want to contemplate any of that, and we are not contemplating it at this time.

“But we need communities to take advantage of opportunities, and I know this is not easy, it is very difficult for people, I appreciate it. I would ask people to stay with us and focus on the basics.

“Don’t worry too much about what is being said internationally or what may happen in six weeks, focus on what is happening today and tomorrow.”
