French public radio RFI has apologized for mistakenly posting obituaries for a number of celebrities who are still alive, including Queen Elizabeth of England and Brazilian soccer legend Pelé.
Citing a “technical problem” that caused the death notices to be posted on its website today, the broadcaster said: “We offer our apologies to those concerned and to those who follow us and trust us.
“We are mobilizing to rectify this huge mistake,” said RFI’s Twitter account, which found itself the target of much ridicule online for the mistake.
Other RFIs declared dead included Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, former US President Jimmy Carter, Cuban leader Raúl Castro, actors Clint Eastwood, Sophia Loren and Brigitte Bardot.
French business magnate Bernard Tapie, 77, whose obituary had been published prematurely by other media outlets at least twice before, was also on the RFI list.
