The best players rose to the top at The Masters, just as we predicted before the tournament. Augusta National is a golf course that rewards really strong play and it’s no coincidence that the guy who played the best golf from tee to green made it to the top.
That is not always the case from week to week, but it is generally a case when we return here to Augusta and that is why it is such a great event. It’s a fair test and generally the guy who plays the best is the one who ends up putting on that green jacket, which is what we have again.

It’s been an incredible performance from Johnson, not just the aggressive plays and birdies he made, it was the way he did it and the way he built each round. It was his short game, it was his stamina, it was his ability to rally in six today to birdie the back of the bogeys in four and five. He controlled this tournament from the first round.
He was one of the bookies’ favorites coming in here and he came in in incredible shape. He’s had great performances at Augusta the last four visits, culminating in second place last year before victory now. He was totally deserved, he is a champion who deserves it and I think there is more to come.

He also played very well in the PGA Championship, where Collin Morikawa fired an incredible last round to defeat him, and has continued in that form ever since. He had to sit down with Covid, then he came back and immediately came second in Houston, so it was all pointing to a great performance here at Augusta.
There are bigger ones to come, no doubt about that, but now there is a lot of competition for the floodgates to open. This means more to him than winning the US Open, as an American player, with The Masters in which they want to win more than anyone else.

You could see how much it meant to him when he was interviewed afterwards, as he made reference to the Green Jacket, the fact that he will go to the Champions Dinner and come back here as long as he wants, all of those things are important to him. .
This is a different Dustin Johnson and we’ve been saying it for a few months. He had the focus and determination in the tournaments that led up to that, he had his eye on the prize to win it and he kept delivering.

What struck me was that minimizing the bogeys was key, his short game was key, but more than anything I think mentally he’s in a different place as a golfer. His handling of the course, his golf IQ, is on a different level now than before.
