Local fishermen fear that a swamp landslide in Donegal has made a river habitable for a key population of salmon.
The peat landslide that occurred on Thursday washed thousands of tons of peat into the Derg River system.
The swamp area had slid down Morne Beg Mountain south of Ballybofey after a period of heavy rain.
The Northern Ireland Department of Infrastructure says it is “aware of the incident and will take the necessary action.”

Gary Irvine, president of the Derg Valley Community Angling Club, says they have already found one dead fish and believe more will emerge in the coming days.
“We keep thinking that the worst is yet to come because the river levels are high and the water is so dark that we can’t see the water to really see what damage has been done.”
“They make me believe that in the next few days a lot of dead fish will start floating to the surface, so next week will be perfect.”
