US President Donald Trump has publicly admitted for the first time that Democratic rival Joe Biden won the recent US election.
He said on Twitter: “He won because the election was rigged.” There is no evidence that this is the case and Twitter flagged the tweet with a warning: “This claim on voter fraud is in dispute.”
Tens of thousands of people marched in Washington DC yesterday to show their support for Donald Trump.
The rally was largely peaceful, but there were some clashes between Trump supporters and counter-protesters.
A stabbing was reported, two policemen were injured and several firearms were seized. Police arrested at least 20 people.
Earlier, President Trump tweeted images of large crowds who said they would not support “corruption.”
Despite losing the election to Democratic opponent Joe Biden, President Trump has refused to budge and has repeatedly claimed, without evidence, that there has been election fraud.
Trump embarked on a car trip in his armored caravan, on his way to and from Virginia to play golf, smiling through the window of his limousine amid cheers and signs that read “Best Presidency” and “Trump 2020: Keep America Great “.
“We wanted to show our support, we feel like they’re trying to steal the election,” said Pam Ross, who drove eight hours from Ohio to join the rally, referring to the president’s political opponents.
“President Trump deserves to see who is behind him, he deserves to feel the love,” Kris Napolitana of Baltimore told AFP. “I think he’s going to win when all the fraud and cheating is discovered.”
With the right-wing militia group Proud Boys among those in attendance, a large security presence was deployed to prevent clashes with anti-Trump events outside of the Supreme Court.
As night fell, police lined up on both sides of a street leading to the White House, separating hundreds of rival protesters.
“We are only holding back people who want to fight,” an official told AFP.

After dark, groups of Trump supporters and counter-protesters clashed in the streets, fighting and throwing punches, a video posted by the Washington Post showed.
President Trump appeared to be following the evening’s events, taking to Twitter to accuse the city’s mayor of “not doing his job” and calling on the police to “get going, do your job, and don’t hold back.”

The latest vote counts gave Democrat Joe Biden a clear victory in the state-by-state Electoral College deciding the presidency, with 306 votes to Trump’s 232.
But Margarita Urtubey, 49, a Miami horse breeder, said the election was “so corrupt,” adding: “Trump won completely. We are here to march to” stop the theft “of this election, to make that our voice Heard. “
Trump tweeted that “hundreds of thousands” had attended, while his spokesperson Kayleigh McEnany made the highly exaggerated claim that more than a million people were present.
But turnout was undeniably high for a heavily Democratic city, driven by protesters from across the United States.
Kathlin Erickson, who said she flew in from Colorado on a plane “full of Trump supporters,” was asked about a possible second Trump administration.
“A Trump victory? That’s a long shot, but anything is possible with God,” he said.
President Trump is preventing Biden from transitioning before he takes office on January 20, 2021, and has filed numerous unsuccessful lawsuits to challenge the vote count across the country.
The Republican leader said Friday that “time will tell” if he remains president, in a momentary slip from his refusal to admit defeat.
Meanwhile, President-elect Joe Biden cycled to a Delaware state park yesterday with his wife Jill and a security detail. When asked if he was closer to choosing his cabinet, he answered “yes.”
