Fewer Covid-19 patients in hospital, but cases increase

The latest figures show that the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in hospitals has dropped to 249. This is five less than last night.

Of these 249 cases, 33 patients are in intensive care units.

The Health Department yesterday announced six more deaths associated with Covid-19.

456 new cases of the virus were also reported.

It brings the total number of coronavirus-related deaths in Ireland to 1,978, while the cumulative number of cases is 67,526.

“The 5-day moving average of the number of cases increased from 354 to 392,” said Dr. Tony Holohan, chief medical officer.

“We have seen higher numbers in recent days than we expected based on the encouraging trends of the last three weeks. We are concerned that this progress is at risk.

“We have to remember that the virus is still very active in the community and we cannot lose our guard. The National Public Health Emergency Team will continue to closely monitor the situation over the next few days,” he added.
