Social media went wild after Amazon Prime appeared to “deliver a united Ireland” after an embarrassing mistake on Twitter.
The subscription service has different rules regarding the rights to broadcast different live events, including the Rugby Fall Nations Cup, which can only be shown in the UK.
However, when responding to a customer based in Northern Ireland who was unable to access the service, the Amazon Help Twitter account described the North as a territory outside the UK.
They wrote: “Thank you for that information. We apologize, but on checking your location you are in Northern Ireland.
“The Rugby Fall Nations Cup coverage is exclusively available to Prime members based in the UK. We do not have rights to other territories.”
However, when confronted with the fact that Northern Ireland is in the UK, they doubled down and added: “Many apologies, but we do not have the broadcasting rights for Ireland or other territories.”
And the incident sparked a huge backlash on social media, with comedian Dara O Briain among the first to poke fun at the mistake, claiming that Amazon has “delivered a united Ireland.”
He wrote on Twitter: “Amazon Prime has delivered a united Ireland, and before 6pm on the same day.”
While RTE radio star Rick O’Shea joked, “This is the Black Friday Deal …”
Amazon even seemed to go one step further, responding to a Scottish independence request by adding, “Thank you for reaching out to us. We will make sure to pass your feedback to the appropriate team.”
