An excited Davy Fitzgerald has asked the County Clare Board to warn a member of his backroom team about his future behavior after a series of incidents during qualifying for Ireland on Saturday.
While acknowledging Clare’s well-deserved victory and the respect shown by his players by fist-bumping him afterward, Wexford’s coach was disgusted with a barrage of insults that he claimed were aimed at him during the game.
A member of Camp Banner sitting on the stand at MW Hire O’Moore Park was warned by administrators about his behavior in the first half.
“The way I was abused today is not correct and should be treated,” Fitzgerald said.
“The abuse and the things that an individual threw at me there today, that was sent there to do it, is not right and has no place in the launch.
“The best team won today without a doubt. They acted unreal today and I couldn’t say a bad word about them. On the field, there were no faulty belts. They worked and tracked and the only thing I will tell Clare fans is to let them play the game that suits them best. That’s what they did.
“I got a lot of stick in Clare because they wanted to go back to the long ball but play what suits them. I am part of a Wexford setup and we congratulate you and say ‘congratulations’ ”.
He added about his team’s performance. “The last two or three weeks have not been good for us. Lee (Chin) came in with one leg today and probably shouldn’t, but when you’re grabbing something to see if you can get something, you’ll put a boy on one leg. But that doesn’t take away from what Clare did today. ”
Fitzgerald was touched by the Banner players who approached him to commiserate.

“It means a lot. I think anyone who has seen me play for Clare knows what it meant to play for my own county and the stick that me and my dad (Clare GAA secretary Pat) have taken sometimes is so unjustified, it’s a shame and it’s not okay.
“It has to stop, end of story. There is no place for it in the GAA at all. What they (Clare) did out there (the field) and the sideline, to be fair, was perfect.
Fitzgerald has one year left in his current tenure with Wexford and revealed that the players want him to stay.
“What is best for them, that is what will be done. They have left me no doubt what they want inside but it will be the best for them ”.
He continued: “I was very mad at them after the Galway game because they didn’t fight but they did fight today. They just weren’t good enough. ”
Naturally, Lohan was delighted with Clare’s performance.
“That was in our boys. There is a bit of spirit there. They were unlucky not to have a better result against Laois on the final day. I thought we played well and unfortunately we conceded goals, but Laois is not a bad team. That result seemed very good to us today. ”
Lohan praised Tony Kelly, who hit 1-15.
“Everyone knows that he is an exceptional talent, but he works very hard. Every day we train, he is the first to arrive. It’s just great. “
