Cork airport has had no flights entering or leaving today, as it marks a dark day for the covid pandemic.

The airport is having its quietest day yet as, although it is open for business, it is not scheduled to have inbound or outbound commercial flights until Sunday.

As flyers currently tend to be business, along with Ryanair and Aer Lingus cutting back for winter, Saturdays are suffering more than any other day of the week.

Tomorrow he only has six flights scheduled in total: two arrivals from Amsterdam (one from KLM and one from Aer Lingus), one arrival from London (Aer Lingus) and three departures for the same routes.

However, this week good progress was recorded for the site, as rapid-fire covid tests were implemented alongside the EU traffic light system.

Managing Director Niall MacCarthy also welcomed the news that the government would provide funding to help them get through the difficult period.

He said: “This week has seen some green shoots internationally, including the adoption of the new EU traffic light system, which is the first step in what we hope will be a step towards a safe, large-scale resumption of air travel within from Europe. We are grateful for this support from the Government in starting that process. “

On Wednesday, an Irish health company also launched a test service from the airport.

RodDoc officially launched the system from Irish airports as part of the EU’s ‘traffic light’ system, which will allow passengers at high-fare locations to take pre-flight samples.

Private tests will cost between € 129 and € 149 and the results will be available in 72 hours.

They also offer “express tests” for € 199.

MacCarthy, who was the first to get one, said: “Cork airport and the aviation industry urgently need a clear path to recovery.

“The pandemic continues to pose a huge problem for the aviation industry.

“Airports and airlines alike expect widespread testing to give passengers greater confidence to travel.

“As a result of this initiative, passengers flying from Cork Airport can now obtain a pre-trip test to show that they have tested negative for coronavirus for health authorities requiring it for Irish-origin traffic.”

The idea of the system is to limit the time people will have to spend isolating themselves when moving from one country to another.

Below, if someone is coming from a “red” area, they will have to be quarantined for the full two weeks, but if they undergo a pre-flight test and are given the go-ahead, it can be reduced to five days (this is effective as of November 29).

Thirty EU countries are included in the program; those from green regions will not need to be isolated or tested.

It is up to each country to decide what measures to take for those who come from the Orange or Red regions; Most will be asked to take a test and self-quarantine for a specified time.
