Ryan Tubridy was stunned after one of his guests was able to contain his excitement by talking about a recent advancement in a Covid-19 vaccine.
Lead immunologist Professor Luke O’Neill spoke to Tubs on this week’s Late Late Show, where the pair discussed all things Covid and, more importantly, the top positive news that emerged this week.
On Monday, pharmaceutical company Pfizer announced that one of its trials of the Covid-19 vaccine they are working on has been shown to be 90% effective.
And Ryan and his guest, Professor O’Neill, clearly shared his excitement at the news.
Speaking on the show, O’Neill said, “I’m still beside myself with excitement. From what we know at this point, this looks very, very promising.”
“A vaccine that’s 90% effective. What that means is that if I give you the vaccine, you are almost completely protected against the virus.
To which Tubs responded in amazement: “Incredible”
However, Luke O’Neill was quick to mention the “caveats” surrounding the news.
He added: “We have not seen the data.
He also lifted the lid on what an informant he knew said about the vaccine.
“A friend of mine was in the trial. And he told me that he felt a little flu and a little sore on the side of the shot like other vaccines. But it’s a strong Ryan vaccine that really boosts the immune system.
However, he added that the experts were “really hopeful, they expected 60 percent; they saw 90 percent, so they were absolutely impressed with the level of efficacy.”
While the vaccine is not yet approved, there is already talk from national and foreign leaders about launching a vaccine for the first half of 2021.
