France and Fiji Suspended After Positive Covid Tests

The Fall Nations Cup match between France and Fiji on Sunday was suspended following positive cases of coronavirus within the Fiji team, the French federation announced on Friday.

The FFR said in a statement that the outcome of the Group B match, which it said cannot be rescheduled, will be decided by the Six Nations committee on Monday.

Fiji, whose pre-tournament preparation match against Portugal was also canceled after three of their players tested positive for the new coronavirus, will play Italy on November 21, while France will face Scotland in Murrayfield the following day.

The Fall Nations Cup was created to replace the November Trials after the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted the international calendar.

Ireland, who start their campaign tonight against Wales, will play one of the four teams from Group B in early December.

All the French players tested negative for coronavirus, the FFR said.

Ben Morel, CEO of organizers Six Nations Rugby, said: “This was a difficult and disappointing decision, but it was the only possible result after today’s test results.

“While we have all been eagerly awaiting this match, the well-being of our players and their supporting teams remains our number one priority.

“We have a rigorous testing program. In this case, it is impossible for the Fijians to present a competitive team and we have no choice but to cancel this match. I want to thank the unions in Fiji and France for their cooperation and we wish the athletes affected a speedy recovery “
