Clare v Wexford, MW Hire O’Moore Park, 2:00 pm
The Davy Derby, two Clare heroes of yesteryear at stake. Once blood brothers, now enemies. A version of Clare from a superhero movie, you might say.
Clare was further ahead of Laois last week than the final score suggested, but an over-reliance on Tony Kelly is sure to catch up with them.
He has scored 30 of his 51 touchdowns in his last two outings.
Clare took a severe blow late last night when her appeal to have David McInerney’s red card rescinded failed.
Wexford has been under Clare’s hero for the longest time and is coming off a poor showing. The stakes are too high for Davy and Wexford to lose this one.
Verdict: Wexford
Tipperary v Cork, LIT Gaelic Grounds, 4 pm
The strangeness of our time. This accessory makes you think of summer and happy crowds.
Cork responded well last weekend and must regain that offensive spirit.
Tipperary’s need to score goals rang true against Limerick. The same goes for Cork, but with less need to tip the scales.
I hope I’m wrong, but I’m going with Tipperary.
Verdict: Tipperary
Galway v Kilkenny, Croke Park, 6:15 pm
Kilkenny had a good first half against Dublin. Or did the Dubs have a terrible half hour against the Cats? We will know more tomorrow night.
Galway, under a new administration, appears to have recharged its batteries once again. This will only be Shane O’Neill’s second game in charge of Galway, and he will be the eighth Tribesmen coach Brian Cody has faced during his tenure.
Galway showed enough on the last day to get the go-ahead. They are less reliant on Joe Canning, and Brian Concannon and Conor Whelan were red hot against Wexford. They seem strong all over the field.
Kilkenny will put that theory to the test, but the game is there for Galway.
Verdict: Galway
Sunday November 15
Waterford v Limerick, Thurles, 4:00 pm
Liam Cahill has good times ahead of him at Waterford, but this weekend he won’t be one of them.
Limerick is three years ahead, and in Gearóid Hegarty and Aaron Gillane have two players who, at times, have not been playable.
I expect manic resistance for long periods from Waterford, but in the end it will probably prove futile.
Verdict: Limerick
