Ireland vs. England player standings: Matt Doherty and Adam Idah are promising, but it’s a night to forget for Kenny’s men

Darren Randolph: 6

Under sustained pressure with constant England possession and a series of corners. I’m slow to react to Sancho’s goal, he needs first-team football.

Matt Doherty: 8

I was really against Sancho and James to go on. He was a reassuring presence when Ireland was under pressure and one of our best players.

Shane Duffy: 5

He needed a ride given his troubles at Celtic, but this was another night to forget. Duffy was well beaten by Maguire on the first goal and needs to regain his confidence.

Jeff Hendrick: 5

His nous was much needed given the inexperience that surrounded him in the Irish midfield. He was divided between defense and attack and exposed himself for the second goal.

Conor Hourihane: 5

Spoken by Seamus Coleman before the game, but once again Hourihane did not meet his billing and was anonymous for long periods.

Callum O’Dowda: 6

He faced much more experienced players at the elite club level and O’Dowda was shown to struggle to make an impact on the game. Lax in possession.

Cyrus Christie: 4

Last minute addition to the winger in place of Coleman, this was a difficult night for Forest’s player. He is to blame for the second and third goals, he is not up to the task.

John Egan: 6

He looked one of the most composed Irish defenders until that head injury, sustained in a collision with teammate Conor Hourihane, forced him to retire early.

Daryl Horgan: 7

Very impressive in that nice opening spell. He was comfortable on the international stage and has done no harm to his cause. It deserves more opportunities.

Alan Browne: 6

Emerging as a key player for Kenny, he helped prepare that opening move that involved Horgan, but found that Winks and Mount were on a level higher than his.

Adam Idah: 7

Young player who is still learning the game, it was difficult for him to participate. He needs playing time before he can make another occasion like Wembley.

Manager

Stephen Kenny: 5

He didn’t use the injuries as a ready-made excuse for a patched flank, but his team’s lack of bite should be a concern.

Substitutes:

Dara O’Shea, early arrival by injured John Egan: 7.

James McClean, offered cover at a time when the floodgates could have opened: 6.

Kevin Long was under constant pressure as the England substitutes posed a threat: 6.

Ronan Curtis, was promising and did well to test goalkeeper Dean Henderson: 7.

Jayson Molumby, another good outing from the youngster: 8
