Is it a hurley or a hurl? After a week of campaigning by All-Stars Lee Chin and Séamus Callanan and over 25,000 votes, we have some clarity. If not a universal agreement.
While Hurley outperformed Hurley by 52 percent to 48 percent, outside of Munster, only Sligo, Donegal, Louth and Monaghan voted in favor. Which means that 22 of the country’s 32 counties must be recognized as Hurl counties.
The public vote was hosted by HurlvHurley.com, created by NOW TV as part of its coverage of the 2020 hurling championship.
Cork proved to be “Hurley’s” largest stronghold with 97 percent of Rebel County’s 4,371 votes voting for it. On the other hand, Wexford was to be the largest county in “Hurl”, with 98 percent of 1,926 voters choosing it.
When only counting the counties competing for the Liam McCarthy Cup, “Hurley” had an even bigger advantage, winning by 56% to 44% in the hurling heartlands.
