University College Cork has established a € 1,000 scholarship in honor of Louise Clancy, a former student who, along with her mother, died in a car accident involving an unaccompanied learner driver.
Louise, 22, and her 58-year-old mother, Geraldine, died three days before Christmas 2015 in the accident near their home in Kilworth.
The School of English established a Louise Clancy Memorial Award in 2018 and now the Clancy family has awarded a scholarship to support “enthusiastic” young scholars like Louise.
The best written dissertation in the final year of the UCC English Bachelor’s degree will be awarded for the next 22 years.
Professor Lee Jenkins, who taught Louise at UCC, said that “she was interested, she was engaged and she always had something to say. She was the student that all the teachers wanted to have in their class.”
A spokesperson for the Clancy family said they were honored in 2018 when the UCC launched the Louise Clancy Memorial Award in their memory.
“We are now pleased to establish a scholarship for the Award. We believe it is a fitting tribute to the memory of Louise and her love for being a student at UCC.
“We thank everyone at the English School for their kindness, help and support and for continuing to keep Louise’s spirit alive at UCC.”
Following a high-profile campaign by his father Noel, the Clancy Amendment went into effect in 2018, making it illegal for a car owner to knowingly allow an unaccompanied student or person without a license to drive it.
