The number of new Covid outbreaks linked to schools declined last week as students returned to classrooms after the midterm break.

This is the second week in a row that the number of school-related outbreaks declined after strong increases at the beginning of the quarter.

Figures released by the Health Protection Surveillance Center (HPSC) show there were 24 new school-related outbreaks last week.

This compares with 30 recorded the week before, while schools were on midterm recess.

Since the start of the school year, 179 outbreaks have been detected in schools, according to HPSC figures.

It defines an outbreak as two or more cases, and says that in the case of schools, transmission within the school has not necessarily been established.

As for schools, the HPSC says these outbreaks are associated with school-age children or school personnel.

Last Monday, increased support to schools was implemented through multidisciplinary teams led by public health.

The latest figures released by the HPSC include Covid-19 outbreaks reported as of midnight on November 7.

Another five outbreaks were related to universities and 11 to daycare centers. This brings the total number of shoots to 21 and 75 respectively.

Overall, the number of new outbreaks recorded last week increased compared to the previous week, from 480 to 572.

Private homes remain the most common environment related to Covid-19 outbreaks here, rising to 442 outbreaks recorded last week compared to 320 the previous week.

Three outbreaks were related to nursing homes and seven to residential institutions.
