A HOMELESS woman killed in a hit and run was due to receive permanent housing soon, the Irish Sun learned.
The victim, in her 40s and remembered as a “girlfriend”, was housed at the Peter McVerry Trust service in Newbridge, Kildare, but was originally from the Kilcullen area of the county and is known to have had several children who are now adults. .
Gardai launched an investigation after the alleged hit-and-run on Thomas Street, just off Newbridge’s main street, last night after 8pm.
The Irish Sun may also reveal that investigators recovered a car and will be sending it in for examination.
The woman was seriously injured in the small lane, covered by an arch, and was rushed to the Naas General Hospital, but was sadly pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
A man, in his 50s, has been arrested tonight and is being questioned at Kildare Garda station.
Local Social Democratic Secretary Chris Pender worked with the woman and was in shock yesterday, saying she would soon have a house.
He told the Irish Sun: “She is one of the local homeless people that I have been dealing with for quite some time to try to help her.
“We didn’t take long to find your accommodation.”
The woman is known to spend time on that road when she got out for a breath away from the emergency shelter.
‘I’M DEVASTATED’
Chris added: “On Monday night, I received a text message from someone saying that something happened on the street.
“I only know one person who sits in that lane. So I’m pretty sure who it was and unfortunately they confirmed it for me this morning.
“I worked with her for quite a while along with a couple of charities for the homeless and stuff.
“He had his problems like anyone else, but he was a sweetheart, he never did anything bad to anyone.
“Honestly, I am devastated. I’ve been wandering around in a daze all morning trying to figure out what I’m going to do today. “
‘SINCERE CONDO ME’
Fine Gael Councilor Peggy O’Dwyer added: “I convey my condolences to the family and relatives of this poor woman. It is shocking what happened. It is very sad for the family with the loss and the tragedy ”.
Yesterday, Gardai kept the scene for a technical and forensic examination by investigators.
The local coroner was also notified and a post-mortem examination was arranged.
A Garda spokesman said: “The result of an autopsy will determine the course of the Garda investigation.”
Appealing to witnesses, he added: “Anyone who has witnessed this incident or with camera footage (including dash cam) of the area at that time, should contact the investigating Gardaí.
“Anyone with information should contact the Newbridge Garda station 045-431212 or the confidential Garda line 1800 666 111.”
