Galway City Council has confirmed that demolition work will begin on two abandoned sites in the city, and that work on a third site is nearing completion.
The former Corrib Great Southern hotel on Dublin Road and the former Oasis nightclub in Salthill will be torn down in the coming months, as part of an effort to cope with the city’s abandoned venues.
The local authority has already issued orders to the owners of the sites in question, informing them that action is necessary to take care of their properties.
The Orders require the demolition of buildings to ground level and stipulate that the works must be completed within a specified time frame.
Demolition of the hotel, near the Mayo Institute of Technology in Galway, is expected to begin in early December and take about four months to complete.
The building has been targeted by vandals in recent years. Earlier this year, extensive damage was done to part of the property when a fire started there.
The City Council says there are no plans for the site after the demolition is complete and that any future development will be subject to the planning process.
Demolition work on Connacht’s former laundry on St Helen’s Street continues today and is believed to be nearing completion.
Meanwhile, discussions continue before the demolition of a third building, the former Oasis nightclub in Salthill.
Once packed with students and visitors to the area, it has also been inactive for more than a decade.
The property has recently been acquired by a new owner.
There are 16 sites on an Abandoned Sites Registry maintained by the City Council, with another 50 sites being actively monitored.
In 2019, a total of € 123,900 was raised from owners of abandoned sites around Galway.
However, these charges remain unpaid.
