A 47-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of his brother last Friday.

Gary Murtagh of Auburn Street in Dublin is charged with the murder of his brother, Paul, who was found dead in the Phibsboro home on Friday afternoon.

The 42-year-old man died of his injuries after a serious assault.

Gary Murtagh received free legal aid and was placed on remand to appear in court on Wednesday.

Mr. Murtagh was brought by Mountjoy detectives to Dublin District Court to face a charge of murdering his younger brother.

Paul Murtagh had been the victim of a violent assault and had died from his injuries.

Detective Sergeant Enda O’Sullivan presented evidence of arrest, indictment and warning.

He told the court that he arrested Gary Murtagh at 8:04 p.m. Saturday at Mountjoy Garda station and when he was charged with the murder of his brother did not respond.

Bail was not requested, as the district court cannot grant bail on a murder charge.

His attorney Matthew de Courcy asked the judge to recommend that he receive adequate medical care for his mental and physical health. The court heard that he had a broken hand.

Judge Bryan Smyth granted Gary Murtagh free legal assistance and took him into custody to appear in Cloverhill District Court via video link next Wednesday.
