The son of a loving mother of two brutally murdered in her Dublin home has said her killer was a devious manipulator who had taken advantage of her generous nature.
Ennis Carroll was just 16 when he came home from playing soccer to find his mother Amanda dead in bed at their home in Cabra, north of Dublin, in October 2018.
Her then-partner Sean Nolan strangled her to death before the cruel killer fled the scene knowing that Dennis would find the body.
Nolan, of Ashington Crescent, Navan Road, Dublin, was sentenced to life in prison in the Central Criminal Court this week after being found guilty of Amanda’s murder after a three-week trial.
In an emotional interview with the Sunday World, 18-year-old Dennis said he would never forget to find his mother’s body and would never forgive Nolan for what he did.
He described Nolan as a master manipulator who brainwashed his mother and further traumatized the family by lying about her in statements to gardaí.
Dennis also urged people to spend as much time as possible with their family and loved ones while they are around.
“She raised me by herself since I was born and I can’t thank her for the great things she did for me and the memories I cherish of her,” Dennis said. “She was just a fantastic woman and I love her to pieces.
“My mom had a big heart. She was too good, a good person and he took advantage of that.”

Dennis said his mother made him the man he is today and said he would do anything to be able to have one more conversation with her.
“You never know when time is running out. Spend more time with your loved ones; always make sure to spend time with your mom, dad, and loved ones.”
Dennis said Nolan was a coward who has no regrets for what he has done and hopes to rot in jail for the rest of his life.
“I will never forgive him. I confided in my mother and I will never, ever forgive him. I am beyond angry.”
Dennis also admits that he was upset by Amanda’s painted image in court, as it was revealed that she had been drinking heavily and had prescription drugs in her system the day Nolan murdered her.
Dennis said it wasn’t her.
“My mom was not the person to go out drinking or doing drugs, but he changed her to be that way.
“He completely changed her. My mother wasn’t taking any pills when she met this guy.
“I know, and my family knows, she wasn’t that type of person, but he had so much control over her. He was manipulating her. I can never forgive this coward for what he’s done. He has absolutely traumatized me and my family. “

He said that Nolan was a good talker and that Amanda loved it after meeting her in the summer of 2018 through the dating app Tinder.
“He was a very good manipulator. He was a good talker and could speak in his own way through anything.
“He would never show his true colors in front of me. He was never violent with my mom in front of me.”
He said that a few months after the relationship, Nolan disappeared for a week.
“I started getting negative vibes from him. He left my mom for almost a week and went to a crack house, but then he came back and my mom went back to him.
It was shortly after they got back together that Nolan brutally murdered Amanda. They had been drinking on October 21, 2018, but Nolan was arrested after crashing his car while drunk. He was later released and they continued drinking before returning to Amanda’s apartment on Quarry Road in Cabra.
Nolan told Gardaí that he and Amanda had a fight and she told him she never loved him and tried to hit him before he put his hand on her face to make him stop talking and then put her hand around his neck. The autopsy revealed that he strangled her for at least 20 seconds.
Dennis was in the next room at the time, but heard nothing.
“He was saying my mom was hitting him beforehand, but I couldn’t hear anything from the next room. He was asleep but you can hear it through my walls. I would have heard him if there were big teeth. Something was said and He didn’t like it and he lashed out at my mom. “
Nolan fled the scene and Dennis, who is a talented footballer, went to play a game with Bohemians Youths the next morning not realizing that his mother was dead.
When he returned he found her in the bedroom, a moment that turned his world completely upside down. Because Nolan pleaded not guilty to murder, Dennis had to testify at trial.
“Explaining how I found my mother’s body in the bedroom was really difficult. It was difficult for many witnesses to go through that. Just remembering what happened takes a lot out of you. It’s like reliving a nightmare.”
He said that if Nolan regretted what he did, he would have gotten help for Amanda after attacking her.
“If he was sorry, he could have called the ambulance, but he didn’t. He’s a manipulator. He’s a dangerous man who needs to be kept off the streets. He thought he could outsmart this and get a homicide.”
“He did nothing to apologize for what he did to our family and how much he hurt us … He’s not sorry, he’s a coward. I want this guy to rot in hell.”
Dennis said that as he learns to cope, he will never get over his mother’s death.
“It takes a lot from you. My mind is on overdrive thinking that I should have done this or that better, was there anything I could have done to take her away from him? But it is what it is now. She will forever be in. our hearts. I love my mom to pieces and would do anything to have one more talk with her. I would do anything to see her again. “
Unfortunately, she was never able to see her first grandchild, born a year after her death.
“He was born in October eight days after my mother’s anniversary. It’s not nice to know that she never got to see him.”
Dennis said he could not have made it through the last few years without the support of his family.
“I have my family and they are very supportive. My uncles, aunts, grandfather, cousins and all of them have been there to support me. We are all there for each other. I love my family in pieces. This has made me more mature. and stronger. It has made me grow quickly. “
He added that his local community has been very supportive and he also wanted to thank the gardaí involved in the case, the prosecution team, in addition to thanking Judge Michael McGrath.
Dennis added that he wanted to pay tribute to his seven-year-old brother Cameron, who has also been through a difficult time since losing his mother.
“I love my little brother and he is a strong boy and he means a lot to me. I would do anything for him and he means the world to me.”
