The parents of a woman tormented by her uncle during a five-year campaign have revealed that she is pregnant for the first time and ready to restart her life.
Co Donegal’s wife, Michelle Doherty, considered ending her life after she was sent dozens of anonymous text messages between 2011 and 2016.
The vile texts were of the most personal nature and called her wh ** e, slut, and many other names.
But the most unsettling thing was that they knew many things about her that only someone close to her family could have known.
On Friday, her uncle and godfather Martin Hughes was jailed for 12 months for harassing Michelle.
It ended after a Gardai investigation resulted in the discovery of a mobile phone in a cardboard box hidden in his garage.
NO REGRETS
Wealthy businessman Hughes, 68, who made money in construction and bars, showed no remorse.
Michelle’s parents Mickey and Marion hugged when Judge John Aylmer’s decision ended years of torture for their family.
For Hughes’s sister Marion, seeing her brother incarcerated brought peace to the family.
She said: “It was nine long years without knowing who he was, but he was always at the top of the list. Michelle never liked him.
“It’s difficult because it’s flesh and blood. I can never forgive him.
“But this gives us closure. I’m not happy at all. We weren’t here to see him go to jail, but we were here to see Michelle get justice.”
Michelle, who is now 44 years old, has resettled in Spain, from where she presented her video as evidence of the case.
Michael said that now he can start over knowing that the people in his community know the truth of what happened.
He said: “She is having her baby in February and it will be a new beginning for all of us and it couldn’t come at a better time.”
