EIGHT GARDAÍ have been suspended for allegations of alleged corruption, as part of a major Garda investigation in the Munster region.
A Garda spokesperson confirmed last night that the eight Garda members were suspended yesterday, as a result of an ongoing investigation, which is being led by a Deputy Commissioner for Special Crime Operations (SCO).
The suspensions come after lengthy investigations by a team of officers attached to the Garda National Criminal Investigation Office.
The investigation focuses on allegations that gardaí failed to carry out Garda’s investigations into alleged traffic violations and public order allegations against various parties.
“Following an ongoing investigation led by the Assistant Commissioner for Special Crime Operations (SCO), involving staff attached to the Garda National Criminal Investigation Office (GNBCI), eight members of An Garda Síochána have been suspended.” said a Garda spokesman.
“This element of the investigation focuses on corruption in the public function.”
“As this is an ongoing investigation, An Garda Síochána will not comment on the rank or location of An Garda Síochána members who have been suspended,” added the spokesperson.
Last October, mobile phones and documents were seized from several Gardaí, as well as from players and GAA officials.

Several Garda stations have also been recorded as part of the investigation.
According to sources, some Gardaí have been informally interviewed by investigators and have claimed that they were ordered to abandon the prosecutions.
Several Gardaí have made voluntary declarations.
A broader investigation into alleged Garda corruption in the Munster region continues, leading to several Gardaí being arrested and interrogated on suspicion of serious corruption offenses.
