Birr and the wider Offaly GAA community are mourning the sudden passing of ‘larger than life character’ Adrian Cahill at the age of 49.

The Offaly legend won two minor All-Ireland titles with the county and went on to represent Offaly at the top tier.

But it was at the club level that Cahill enjoyed his greatest success: he won an all-Ireland club title with Birr in 1995.

Cahill, a talented winger, was part of minor teams that produced hurling legends such as Brian Whelahan, Johnny Dooley and John Troy.

He broke into the senior team around 1989, but suffered a broken leg that ultimately shortened his inter-county career when he played his last game in the Offaly colors in 1993.

A popular figure off the court, his brother Gary also enjoyed a decorated inter-county run, while his nephew Eoghan Cahill was in action for Faithful County today, scoring 0-17 against Derry.

On Twitter, Birr GAA said: “It is with great sadness and great regret that everyone involved with Birr GAA Club learned of the sudden passing of our great gael Adrian Cahill.

“Thoughts and prayers with the Cahill family, Bulfin Park during this dark time. RIP Mongo.”

The club added: “Where do you start when trying to do justice to a larger-than-life character? Adrian had the ability most others could only dream of on the field and a heart of gold outside of her, with a sharp wit that always brought smiles to people’s faces. “

Former teammate and GAA expert Daithi Regan said: “I RIP a great colleague, a fantastic character, a great pair of hands.

“We will all miss him”.
