World leaders congratulate Biden on ‘historic’ win

Political leaders around the world were quick to congratulate Joe Biden after US networks declared him the winner of the bitter White House race for President Donald Trump.

As supporters took to the streets of Washington and other cities in an exuberant celebration and former US President Barack Obama praised Biden’s victory as “decisive” and “historic”, these are some of the early reactions from political figures from around the world:


Ireland

Taoiseach Micheál Martin was one of the first to take to Twitter and hail Irish-American Democrat Joe Biden as “president-elect.”

“I want to congratulate the newly elected US President @JoeBiden,” Martin tweeted.

“Joe Biden has been a true friend to this nation his entire life and I look forward to working with him for years to come. I also look forward to welcoming him home when circumstances allow!” Martin added.


Canada

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was also quick.
