Warm tributes have been paid to former hurling patrickswell captain Paul Carey following his tragic death in a traffic accident in Dubai yesterday.

A teacher of English and religion, he was preparing to return home full time to live once again in his native parish with his wife Anna and their young son Fionn for Christmas.

Carey had already moved to Limerick and returned to Dubai to finish a teaching contract and tie up some loose ends, having moved to the Middle East in 2016.

A former student of St Clement’s, he won the All-Ireland title with his senior B pitchers in 1997.

He also celebrated three senior hurling titles with his club, captaining the team in 2003.

That year, he dated his nephew, current All-Star pitcher Cian Lynch, when The Well triumphed.

He played twice in the national league for Limerick, debuting against Derry in 2002 when he started alongside Ciaran.

However, Paul’s senior debut had occurred in November 1998 at Semple Stadium when Limerick faced Tipperary in the South-East League.

He also played soccer for Limerick FC.
