A senior epidemiologist has said that Ireland has made “great strides” to curb the spread of Covid-19 while speaking about how people can learn to live with the virus in the future.

Professor Philip Nolan, Chairman of NPHET’s Irish Epidemiological Models Advisory Group, posted a positive update on the Covid-19 situation in Ireland as cases continue to decline.

Currently, the country is still under Level Five restrictions that will likely continue until the end of the month.

However, Professor Philip Nolan said that squashing the virus would help us pave the way to fight the virus while living with fewer restrictions.

In an update Friday night, he said: “We have made great progress in suppressing the transmission of SARS-CoV-2. Let’s take this as encouragement to move forward.

“If we reduce the cases and the strength of the infection to very low levels, we can find ways to keep the virus suppressed with fewer restrictions.

“The daily incidence and the 14-day cumulative incidence are decreasing; the hospitalization and ICU figures have stabilized and may begin to decrease.

“There has been a very significant decrease in incidence in younger people, and positive signs that the level of infection in people over 65 is starting to decline. We have worked very hard to protect each other. #Firm hold

Its positive update came as an additional 499 coronavirus cases were confirmed in Ireland, while sadly eight deaths were announced.

While cases remain high, positive trends continue to emerge as the country remains under a strict lockdown.

On Friday, of the counties that registered new cases, a total of seven saw fewer than five confirmed cases.
