José Mourinho criticized Giovani Lo Celso despite his impressive Europa League performance with Tottenham, stating that the midfielder is not fit enough.
Harry Kane scored his 200th goal for Tottenham in a greatly improved Europa League performance for Mourinho’s side by beating Ludogorets 3-1.
Mourinho questioned the attitude of his players after a much-changed team lost in Antwerp last week, but the Spurs had intensity in their game from the start in Bulgaria. Lo Celso was one of four players who retired at halftime during last week’s 1-0 defeat in Belgium, but Mourinho gave him another chance to shine, who has used it sparingly this season with only a start to his name in the Premier League.
He answered the call with a man of the match performance in midfield, culminating his industrious and elegant night of work with the third goal.
But Mourinho was in no mood to let himself be carried away by Lo Celso, questioning his physical condition.
When asked to analyze his performance, Mourinho said: “Good with the ball and not very good without the ball. His physical condition is not good. He did not have preseason.
“During the closure of the previous season he had problems; he did not train in that period when other guys were training, so he has been up and down in his preparation. So he has come now, step by step.
“I feel that when he plays he is not the Gio that we know, nor the Gio that we know can be an incredible player. But with the ball, of course, great criteria and he knows what he is doing, of course, and understands the way “. we want to play, but we need more intensity to be fitter, more intense and stronger in transitions.
“But of course he played over an hour, and that hour, of course, was a football game that we needed to win, but it was also, let’s say, a training session to improve his fitness.”
The result leaves Mourinho’s men in a comfortable position with six points from their first three games in Group J and two remain at home.
The Spurs manager was satisfied with the reaction after a disappointing result last week.
“We started the game with ambition, which was different than what we did in Antwerp. So good attitude to start with. We tried to kill the game in the first half.
“It was not possible with 2-0 because the 2-0 result is still open, but it was a strong start and a performance with two good goals and hitting the post.
“We dominated completely and I don’t remember a single dangerous situation for them. That made the difference because in Antwerp we gave the rival an advantage and then when they were good they won. They closed everything in the way they could and we couldn’t react.”
