As of 2:00 p.m. today, 302 covid patients are hospitalized, of which 38 are in the ICU. 20 additional hospitalizations in the last 24 hours.

Dr. Tony Holohan, Medical Director of the Department of Health, said; “There is a second increase taking place across Europe. Ireland and Finland are the only European countries in the EU where reductions in incidence of 14 days have been observed. All other countries are increasing.

“Tier 5 efforts over the past two weeks have succeeded in further reducing community transmission and disease incidence in Ireland, however now is not the time to be complacent. We must keep reducing this disease, we must keep going.

“The age group 19-24 years has achieved a dramatic reduction in incidence, from 450 per 100,000 to 150 per 100,000 in two weeks. They have also cut their contacts in half in the last 5 weeks. We must all recognize the efforts of our young people and I thank them ”.

Professor Philip Nolan, Chairman of NPHET’s Irish Epidemiological Modeling Advisory Group, said: “We estimate the breeding number at 0.7 – 0.9.

“This is a testament to our collective effort to stop the spread of the virus and it is very good news. We may be improving now, but it depends on whether we maintain it.

“If we continue to use this time to reduce infection, we will be in a good position in four weeks.”

Dr. Vida Hamilton, National Clinical Advisor and Group Leader, Acute Hospitals, HSE: “While the demographic age of cases varies from the first increase in March to this, ICU admissions have affected people of all ages. age groups, with an average length of stay of 17.8 days.

“People of all ages are potentially vulnerable to the most extreme symptoms of this disease.”
