Several Ennis Hospital patients and staff tested positive for Covid-19.
An outbreak control team was established after several people became infected in a ward on Thursday.
Testing and contact tracing are already underway, and officials ban all visits.
It is called an outbreak in a healthcare setting when there are a minimum of two positive contacts.
In accordance with national guidance, the hospital is implementing all appropriate infection control measures to mitigate the risk to patients and staff.
Covid-19 testing and contact tracing of both staff and patients are carried out to ensure the protection of public health.
Hospital preparedness plans are developed to support continuity of services and guide senior management in identifying the level of impact on service and staff.
The UL Hospital Group has confirmed that this is the first Covid-19 outbreak at Ennis Hospital.
Patricia O’Gorman, Ennis Hospital Nursing Operations Director, said the hospital understands that this is an anxious time for
patients, their families, their staff and their loved ones.
“We would like to assure you that the outbreak control team now on site is taking all necessary steps to contain this outbreak to protect the health of our patients and the general public.
“All affected patients will continue to receive the highest standards of care at Ennis Hospital.
“We remind the public that visits are not allowed at this time.
“Unfortunately, we have also made the decision to suspend window visits at the hospital until further notice. We also remind patients that services continue at the hospital.
“The Injury Unit and the Medical Evaluation Unit continue to function and patients must continue to attend normally for their
appointments or procedures unless the hospital communicates in advance, ”Ms. O’Gorman said.
As has been the case since the start of the pandemic, patients with any symptoms of Covid-19 are asked not to go to the hospital or any health center, but to call their GP for advice.
